So good to be watching my favv show again, now that links for season 3 are up! Just wanted to share with you guys the theme track of ER which I've heard a million times now and I totally love!

ER Season One Opening Credits
Don't miss my fav Doctor Carter! (Noah Wyle) and Doctor Ross (George Cloony) and Doctor Greene (Anthony Edward) .heee.. ok I like them all :P

Not much else is going in life right now, besides stoning around, watchin ER and fantasizing about my acoustic guitar which I havn't got yet :( moo. I probably should start revising chem and bio considering my chem was so bad at As and there's gonna be lots of it in uni... but I'll worry about that later :P

Anw, I guess the next episode should have loaded by now, I'll leave you with one of my fav ER pics.

Relief, oh what glorious relief!

Life is beautiful again!! All the tensions of the past 6 months, from worrying over the suckiness of the A, all the endless applications to US and Aus uni's, trips to IDP, talking to any and everyone alive to find out about my choices, prioritizing and then re-organizing my list of unis and trying to cover all the what-ifs conceivable. God, all that has come to a happy end!

Haha, and now that I look at it, what a fantastic waste of time and trees, traveling around the country and filling out all kinds of forms to get a place in a good uni.

I swear when I got the letter today, I was like stunned. I mean this was the last thing on the earth I expected. People with straight As struggle for seats in this course, and I made it with my useless grades yaar, that too without an interview!! It's like amazing for my down in the dumps self esteem lol.. I guess all the tears and frustration of PW and all the CCA stuff, esp the guitar SYF that was the bane of my existence.. it's all paid off.

So great to finally have life moving again, out of the standstill phase. Now I can finally go and register for driving classes, sign up for a year's gym membership, start talking to profs, plan dates for my trip to delhi, get course books, look for accommodation, brush up on my lousy chem and omg the list is endless. I'm just so so so so SO glad that I've made it here.

And even though everyone says that NUS is much better, i've talked to so many people who beg to differ and say NUS is just a brand name. In fact NTU's sch of bio science is aiming to the top in the world, with tie ups with all the leading uni's and LOTS of overseas attachments. There's a very low student- prof ratio and an amazing array of equipment I've seen myself. In fact, my aim to work at Biopolis is very much achievable because NTU has affiliation with Biopolis agencies and places are set up for NTU grads.

Wowza, finally the time to live again has come!

The Burden of Saving the World

Wow, I have so much to blog about, I dunno where to start! So many things have happened so quickly over the last few days (=

Hrm, ok it starts off with my troubles in trying to save the world (the coral triangle rather). In case you have no idea what that is, its this area which is very rich in coral reefs (something of an underwater amazon really) which comes under the territory of 6 countries: PNG, Solomon Islands, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Fiji Islands. This coral reefs together in this region roughly make a triangle, so thats where the name comes from.

Coral_triangle_map
Coral_triangle_map

Its in trouble right now because of it sitting in the middle of Asia, where rapid coastal development, pollution, live reef fishing and all kinds of horrible things are happening. Since corals can only live within a very narrow range of temperature, salinity and nutrient parameters they are in not a very good shape right now.

Thats where the WWF comes in, its got some great initiatives going on at different levels, with local communities of fishermen, with governments to promote better fishing practices and even with the tourism industry to get them to see the advantages of eco-tourism and their benefit in protecting the corals and fish.

Its really important considering the coral triangle is home to such a diverse range of fish and turtles and all, I mean like 6 of 7 kinds of endangered turtles are found in the CT. Its sad that alot of turtles are killed as bycatch for the fish when they get trapped in the nets and all.

My noble plan to save the world was to volunteer at the WWF booth at the Asian Dive Expo on Saturday  to engage people and raise awareness about the Coral Triangle. Who knew it would be such a pain? lol..

Started off with me and nut meeting at City Hall (I started out at Bishan), and heading off to Expo (the mrt station which is one stop away from Changi Airport) which is on the green line ( we had to change train at Tanah Merah) and it took us a grand total of 37 minutes to get there. At this point, its 3:15, so we're 15 mins late for our shift. Think thats bad? We reach Expo and call up this lady who says come to hall 602. And there's no such thing as a hall 602 at Singapore Expo!! Suddenly something clicks in my head and the word Suntec swims into my head.

I'm like nut, this is the suntec convention centre right? she's like no... this is singapore expo. SHIT. I happily assumed she knew the way and she assumed a dive expo would be held at EXPO. Like omgggggg where the hell are we??? I make a very embarrassed call to the director of the volunteer organization and he's like umm ok.. so we'll wait for you then.

Shoots.. we then, using our immaculate sense of direction decide suntec has to be at Raffles Place, and go through the whole treacherous train ride backwards to Raffles Place (one stop after City Hall) only to realize there's no suntec on any signboards there!!! The person at the station control then informs us its actually at City Hall.

-_________________________-

So now, we're back to where we started, and its 4:10. Net Distance covered? 0 km.

My Travels
My Travels

From there, its a pretty long walk to suntec convention centre. So anyway, we finally reach (half dead) and realise we can't go in without name tags, which the director guy has, and now he's un- contactable!!! We end up waiting another 20 mins at least for the guy from WWF to come and rescue us. He comes up with a spare volunteer badge, belonging to one Gayathri Nair (I end up taking that) and very generously buys one for nut, who thus remains Natasha.

Once we were in, it turned out it WASN'T easy to talk to people randomly, who were mostly there to buy diving equipment and frustrate the MC of the day's auction by being uncooperative. I finally plucked up the courage to approach a nice looking angrez lady and ask her if she knows about the coral triangle. She's like "yeah". Then I launch into my explanation of why its messed up right now and helpfully ask her if she knows what Coral Bleaching is. She looks at me like one would look at a sea slug called Gayathri Nair and replies "I'm a marine biologist".

SHIT.

Then she condescendingly goes " So, what are you doing about it?" I'm like errrr... I'm just volunteering here (I swear she made me feel so small)

moooooo.. NOT FAIIIIIIIR.

Anyway, the rest of the time was relatively uneventful, no more scheming marine biologists came to me. The only saving grace was the fantastic scrumptious meal I had at New York, New York- Bruschetta Appetizer, Half a salmon sandwich, half a chicken sandwich (Nut and I traded), a Mango and Strawberry smoothy and Mud Pie and Ice Cream. All for $20!!! Amazingly awesome food. I swear its like my fav restaurant now.

Awesome match tonight, Kolkata Night Riders vs Royal Challengers.. KKR won by 140 runs! It was pretty clear from the time kkr made 222-3 who the winner would be, but it was still a great match because of the fantastic 153 by Bredon McCullum, awesome bowling of ganguly and ishant sharma and feilding of ponting (except for the last drop that he made :( )

Oh and not to forget shah rukh's crazy dancing ;P GO KNIGHT RIDERS!

09 When You Look Me In The Eyes Simple Plan When I'm Gone Chris_Brown_-_Mixshow_Ingredients_Vol._17_-_06_.With_You

Last 2 days have been unbelievably dull! Well ok yesterday was quite fun when I found tabs for some of my fav songs (above) and strummed along for like 3 hours. But then I had to teach Archit and Prachi in the evening so it was kinda like a guitar overdose >< and my fingers are still hurting today and i've got my guitar lesson at 5.. SIGH. i need to space things out.

Things lined up for today:
1. Practice Hotel California
2. Email Uni Syd about environment studies
3. Transcribe
4. Go out for dinner with LP, Nat n Pris. (edit: just came back- had a totally awesome time and i ended up drinking nat's drink (Sex on the Beach) along with mine (Cosmo) which is alot for a first timer haha.. quite high now!)

dead ><

Thanks to nutty dear, I ran the entire Bishan Park on sunday (well ok my side of the entire bishan park) which is more than I've ever done in my life. So I totally died running, like my heart was beating at 10000 beats per minute, my legs were jelly and I had a slippery tongue. On top of that, I ran with a major shoe bite thanks to the stupid jutees I wore on Friday (once again Nut's fault for making me walk all around Bugis).

And now you'd think I'd learn my lesson and never jog again, but you're wrong because I just did that same round again today in a burst of I-need-to-get-fit spirit. So now, I'm absolutely completely paralyzed. Augh.. I should do this only on weekends so that I don't land up flopping around through the week. SIGH.

The-11th-hour-poster-small
The-11th-hour-poster-small

I just bought and watched the 11th Hour, a documentary produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. (I didn't know one of my fav actors was also an environmentalist!) It was very inspiring and definitely worth the money. Wow, you come out feeling totally charged up and wanting to change the world, but thats where the problem is. As an individual there isn't much that one's actions alone can do to save the planet. I mean, yeah, I reuse my things, used recycled paper, observe Earth Hour and all, but i see so much wastage everyday in even the packaging of the littlest of things. It makes me wonder, are my sacrifices meaningful at all?

I guess it is up to people who are environmentally aware to educate and change others (or at least make them feel guilty!)

Back to the documentary, it was really amazing because it raised so many interesting points. It started off with the impacts of global warming and climate change that can be seen all around the world, and why this is the tipping point from where things could go very wrong.
The 11th Hour "Concern for Life"

Interesting thing they said was, that when people say "Saving the Earth" its actually a misstatement. The earth is going to survive, long after humanity is extinct. The earth being such a dynamic system will adapt to any changes in the climate, sea levels etc, its really humanity that will suffer. "Saving Us" is more like it.

Also, that every individual, regardless of age and education etc votes every single day. As long as you purchase a product, you vote that I approve of how this product was made, the resources utilized in making it and of what will happen to it when I no longer have any use for it. Isn't that scary? Just think of all the things you could have bought in your whole life. Some fancy shoes or dress or something that was in fashion for only a while, that you never really used again.

The amount of waste we create everyday is just astounding, and definitely something has to be done. Climate change is a problem that needs to be answered by our generation if any improvements are going to be made. Ecological issues should not be ignored anymore and its really heartening that so many people around the world are taking a stand.

Some other interesting issues and statistics, as well as things ordinary people can do everyday:
